Meteors Fall 35-13 To Parma In Week 1

The Midpark Varsity football team began the 2010 season with a tough 35-13 road loss to Parma at Byers Field on Friday night. Parma, who qualified for the playoffs last year, starts the year 1-0 while Midpark falls to 0-1 and will host Valley Forge next week.

The Redmen struggled to hold onto the football in the first two possessions of the game. Midpark forced back-to-back fumbles and gained possession twice in Parma territory but could not capitalize with a score. Parma converted their next drive when quarterback Joe Pullman found brother Bill Pullman in the end zone for a eight-yard score to put Parma on top 7-0.

Parma took advantage of a Midpark special teams miscue to get another score. The Meteors attempted a long field goal that was blocked and with the ball still live Pullman picked it up and took it 82-yards for a score to make it 14-0.

The Meteors moved the ball down the field on their next drive highlighted by a big pass play from Kyle Heineke to Brandon Haney for 61-yards to set up the first Midpark score. Heineke found Garrett Darby for a five-yard reception for a touchdown to make it 14-6.

Midpark got their final score on a one-yard run by Haney to make it 28-13. Parma added a late score to make up the final margin.

The Meteors defense forced five turnovers, but also had four turnovers themselves. Haney rushed for over 100 yards on 25 carries and a score in his debut as Midpark’s featured back. Heineke finished 14-for-33 with 185 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions in his first game as quarterback.

Midpark will host Valley Forge next Friday night at Finnie Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7:30pm and the game can be heard live atwww.midparksports.com.
