The Midpark Girls basketball team had one thing in mind in their second trip to the Classic in the Country Challenge on Monday afternoon. Do everything the opposite of last year. The Meteors did exactly that as they pulled away from #6 ranked Springboro for a 56-45 victory.
The Meteors (11-1, 7-0) and Panthers took most of the first quarter trying to get a feel for each other in their first ever meeting of two teams that made the Regional Finals last year in division one. The two teams worked their way to an 8-8 tie after one quarter.
Midpark’s offense picked up in the second quarter behind the passing of senior point guard Rachel Theriot and the inside play of sophomore Stasha Carey. Springboro struggled from the field in the first half as they converted on just 4-of-20 from the field in the half. The Panthers made a late run in the second quarter to make it 22-17 at the break.
The Panthers came out in the second half with a history of strong third quarter play and they tried to pick the tempo up early in the frame, but an ankle injury to post Jenny DeGraaf slowed Springboro’s attack. Senior Brittany Smith heated up from behind the three-point line as she hit three from long range to help build the Meteors lead to double digits.
Midpark shot 12-for-21 (57%) in the second half while Springboro went 10-for-30 (30%). The Meteors were 3-for-11 from behind the arc and 9-for-14 from the free throw line.
The Meteors were led by Carey’s 18 point 10 rebound performance while Smith added 15 points and four assists. Senior Lexi Hassing added 10 points and six rebounds while Theriot scored six points and dished out 10 assists while pulling down eight rebounds.
Midpark will return to conference play for the second time around on Saturday afternoon when they host Brecksville. The freshmen game will being at 11:30am followed by the JV game at 1pm and varsity at 2:30pm.
